One of the great things about el Puerto de Santa Maria is that there is something to do all year round.
You just have to choose the season you want to come.

Winter:

In December as Christmas approaches, Flamenco fills the bars and streets of El Puerto de Santa Maria. Flamenco guitar players and singers perform live. Everyone is welcome to join in.

In February, it’s carnival time, and El Puerto de Santa Maria becomes a hub of creativity, satire and irony brought by the “comparsas”, “chirigotas” and “coros,” typical carnival singing groups.

Spring:

In March/April Easter Week, Semana Santa, is a national holiday. During this week, the religious and the popular mood mix together and the Brotherhoods take their religious images out to the silent and fervent streets with the only echoes of the saetas , flamenco verse sung at processions.

In April/May, you can't come to El Puerto de Santa Maria without spending at least one night at the much loved Feria which is one of the traditional Andalusian fairs where the women wear their colourful gypsy dresses and everybody dances sevillanas late into the night. This celebration represents the welcoming of the new grape season and is bound to the local Jerez-Xeres-Sherry wine and bullfighting festivities.

Summer:

On he 16th of July, the fishermen organise a festival which culminates in a seafaring boat procession carrying the  Virgin’s  along the river Guadalete.

The months of July/August are the time to see a corrida – a bull fight - in el Puerto’s impressive bullring. During the summer period the best bullfighters in Spain meet here.

Autumn:

Monkey Week, a 3 day international rock music festival which takes place in October. This is a relativlely new festival which is very rapidly gaining popularity.

And the rest of the year?

Tapas....

Almost a sport in Spain and especially in Andalusia as nobody drinks without having a little something with it. Tapas range from a simple bowl of olives to more complex and inventive small plates. Variations are endless.

And just so you know, according to statistics, Spain has 1 bar/restaurant for each 1000 inhabitants.

Hanging out on the beach

El Puerto de Santa Maria has 8 km of sandy beaches and in fact the nearby beach of Las Redes was recently voted the best beach in Spain by El Pais, one of the biggest newspapers in Spain.
Just grab your bike and sunscreen and head off. Don't worry about bringing food. The "chiringuitos" are open all year long with food and refreshments.
Ask the locals for their favourite spot: Los Toruños, Valdelagrana, La Puntilla, La Muralla, El Buzo, El Cangrejo Rojo, Las Redes, Fuentebravia.
